My Favorite British Television Shows
OK, I admit it, I’m an Anglophile. And after the election this week I am particularly disgusted at America (which makes me love Britain even more--Brexit and all). But seriously, British television is infinitely better than American TV at least 95% of the time. Check out some of the following shows (heavy on the quirky characters, with a few slick crime shows to round it out).
Miranda
Miranda is weird, wonderful and genuinely hilarious. I can't think of any television character I want to be friends with IRL more than her. Watch on Hulu or Acorn TV.
Doc Martin
Charming light-hearted drama about crabby, socially awkward doctor (Martin Clunes) in small town English village. Fantastic supporting cast of quirky characters. Find different seasons on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Google Play and Acorn TV.
The Fall
Super slow moving, beautifully shot and ultra-disturbing drama about a charismatic serial killer. Stars Gillian Anderson with a somewhat annoying British accent, but try to look past it. Only on Netflix.
Suspects
This procedural crime drama is supposed to be at least partially ad libbed. Fay Ripley is awesome as always. On Acorn TV.
Reggie Perrin
Martin Clunes (again) as a fed-up corporate exec. Pokes great fun at the ridiculousness and meaninglessness of much of modern work life as well as corporate culture. Faye Ripley is also in this one. Does not appear to be available to stream at the moment.
Detectorists
Sweet and charming series about a couple of semi-loser metal detectorists forever searching for buried treasure. Different seasons can be found on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Acorn TV.
Saxondale
Something about this show kills me every time I watch it. Steven Coogan stars as a former roadie turned pest control technician. Really funny, good-hearted show. On Amazon and Vudu.
Dirk Gently
Quirky mystery series. Dirk Gently (Stephen Mangan) solves mysteries using a holistic approach and belief that everything is interconnected. On Amazon and Acorn TV. (Do not confuse with new Dirk Gently starring Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood--I haven't seen this one yet, but could be good?)
Hinterland
Another moody, slow-moving, beautifully shot crime show. This time set in Wales. Only on Netflix.
Raised by Wolves
Over-the-top comedy about single mom of 6 awkward, home-schooled children. Oldest daughter Jermaine is reason enough to watch this series. This seems to be unavailable for streaming at the moment.
Keeping Up Appearances
A PBS favorite and just a really funny show. Maybe I relate to it a little too much? Netflix has a few of the episodes.
